The Nostalgia and Creativity of Buttons and Scraps to Create Art ...
Ruth Glover Warren is a reuse artist who has been creating from reclaimed materials since childhood. Following the example of her ever-resourceful parents, she began making Christmas ornaments from scrap materials in grade school. Ruth created her first scrap quilts in her teens, and has worked with scrap fabric in some form or fashion ever since.
Ruth studied Communication Arts at Marist College and worked at IBM Corporation and IBM United Kingdom in a variety of public relations, marketing, and information development positions. When she left the corporate world to raise her children. she also began pursuing a more art-oriented career, creating and selling quilt-related items at shows, online, in craft stores and helping with costume design at a dance studio.
She then began volunteering at The Scrap Exchange, a nonprofit creative reuse arts center in Durham, NC. In addition to helping sort and process donated materials, she was able to put her marketing and communication skills to good use again. She was promoted to Marketing and Promotions Manager. Ruth continued to develop as an artist, and participated in multiple solo and group exhibitions in their Green Gallery and Cameron Gallery. She also taught creative reuse technique classes through The Scrap Exchange's Creative Classes program and Duke University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program.
Scrap fabric continues to be a major source of inspiration and she developed a technique that she calls "fabric mosaic" using even the tiniest pieces of scraps in her creations. The ever-abundant supply of reclaimed materials at The Scrap Exchange adds to the spectrum of discarded materials.
Last year, Ruth and her husband moved to Bradenton, Florida, where she is pursuing a career as a full-time artist. "I knew we had found our retirement town when we first visited Bradenton and I discovered the magic that is happening in the art world here".
